As the UK transitions away from BS 476 Class 1/Class 2 fire classifications, the new European standard EN 13501-1 is now the benchmark for fire safety. It goes far beyond surface flame spread, introducing classifications for smoke production and burning droplets — key risk factors in real-world fire events.

🔍 What’s Changed Under EN 13501?

The EN 13501-1 standard assesses materials using three main factors:

• Combustibility / Flame Spread (A1, A2, B, C, D, E, F)
• Smoke Production (s1 = low smoke, s3 = high smoke)
• Burning Droplets (d0 = none, d2 = many)

This system provides a clearer, safer picture of how construction materials behave in a fire — and it’s the new legal baseline for many buildings in the UK.
